Obesity in America

Read an article in TIME today about obesity … apparently 2/3 of all Americans are overweight. *sigh* We’ve all been desensitized to fatness … you walk out on the street, and you don’t even think people are fat anymore. And because America’s a society where everybody is supposed to be made to feel good about themselves, nobody’s willing to tell other people that they’re fat.

On my flight from Atlanta to Charleston yesterday, I sat next to a really fat man, except I didn’t really realize he was fat until after i sat down. Walking up to my row, he looked like a normal American, and only after I sat down next to him in my seat did I realize that he took up the entirety of his seat, and he overflowed … into my seat. It was disgusting. Also, did you know that there are seat belt extenders on airplanes? Why have we come to this???? Airlines have limits on the weight of luggage, both checked and carry-on, so by that same token, shouldn’t they have limits on the weight of a single passenger on one ticket? Those over the limit will have to purchase two tickets. I mean, they limit luggage weight for safety reasons …

Toronto’s beautiful, but for whatever reason, whenever we go out, I never remember to bring my camera. so no pictures to post, unfortunately … but I do have one more day here … so maybe on my way to the airport, I’ll snap some pictures.

The conference is fun, educational, very educational. And I never realized that all these scientists not only come to conferences to exchange research, but they also come to have fun … we go out every night, wine and dine and then hit the bars. It’s pretty insane.

The hotel’s a really nice hotel, super expensive, but a bit more affordable since three of us students are sharing the cost … and the total will eventually be reimbursed back to us. There’s a full health spa, so i booked a manicure! That’s at 5 this afternoon. i can’t wait; i haven’t had long nails in a long time (stress causes me to break them when I’m studying or something), so I’m excited to have long nails and going for a manicure.

ryan should be back in the States today, I think he said his flight was getting in this morning? I’m planning on calling him! yay!! and i get to see him in a week, sweet!

In toronto, for the international vascular biology meeting. Don’t know what I think yet … but the people are definitely a lot more dressed up than I had planned on being. But seeing as how I didn’t bring any other clothes, I’ll just try to disappear in the crowds.

Brian, my research advisor at UVA, is here somewhere, but haven’t run into him yet. Maybe lunchtime?
