100th post

My dad’s getting pretty cute these days. He sent me this picture last night with the following words. Go dad!

You may want to see this one. I like it.

South Korea’s got Seoul

If I weren’t too cheap to buy $18 tshirts, I’d snatch up quite a few of these. Check it. What’s your favorite? Mine’s the Greece one. Or maybe the South Korea one. Oh yeah, and I totally ripped the title of this entry off of these witty people. Hope they don’t sue me.

Diet everything

Ryan has this friend Anthony who likes to talk about being a super-taster. His criteria for being a super-taster is this chemical science teachers sometimes put on kids’ tongues in middle school science class. Some 90% of people can’t taste it, but the few who can think it’s super bitter. I did the test in 7th grade and thought it was very bitter, so now I am a self-proclaimed super-taster along with anthony.

There are downsides to being a super-taster, which brings me to the point of this entry. For some reason or another, I am especially sensitive to the taste of sugar substitutes. I can’t stand diet sodas. My dad bought this OJ once that claimed to be 1/3 the carbs of other OJs. I didn’t really pay attention to the carton when I poured it, but as soon as I drank it, I realized that it wasn’t right. It just tasted funny. Looking at the carton again, sure enough, 50% of the “OJ” was fake stuff with fake sugar added, and with less sugar comes less carbs. Gag me now.

This morning I go to the fridge, get out a yogurt, take a spoonful, and it tasted nasty, almost diety. I was really confused because it’s yogurt, and how can yogurt be diet?? I thought I must just be imagining things. But no, I checked the ingredients, and sure enough, there was aspartame, the stuff in nutrisweet. Diet yogurt, great. The little container even boasted “70% less sugar!” I should check labels more carefully.

Now my question is, why is there sugar substitutes in EVERYTHING now? Sodas I can understand, or rather I can accept because it’s been around for so long. But diet orange juice?? Diet yogurt?? WTF??? The food manufacturers have made it necessary for me to start scrounging through every ingredient list now and stay away from anything that says reduced sugar. Ugh. The worst part is, I like buying “low fat” stuff, but now I have to really be careful to differentiate “low fat” with “low sugar” or worse, “low carbs.”

Hodge Podge

A fellow UVA wahoo is in the top 24 of American Idol!!! You can check out his Idol profile, and you can watch Monday nights 8-9pm on Fox and vote for him :) He didn’t sing that well tonight, but I voted for him anyways. And FYI: I haven’t missed a single American Idol episode yet this season. I’m such a sucker for TV.

This past weekend was a bit crazy: lots of work, but lots of fun. Ryan and I went skiing at Mt. Sunapee with the S&P sponsored trip, came back Saturday night and immediately got ready for the Law Prom, the law school’s annual semiformal.

I think I sprained my neck skiing.

Because I have so much work, I procrastinate more than ever.

My new penguin

My dad bought me a penguin yesterday! Isn’t he cute??

exam count

Two down … one more to go. Come on, I need some motivation. Can’t seem to get started on working.

this “bracket” thing

Reading over what I wrote yesterday, the whole being thankful for my “bracket” in life sounds pretty arrogant and snobbish, which wasn’t what I intended. I only meant it as a way of expressing where I stand in society … not really a status either, because status implies more snobbishness.

I am thankful for where I am right now. I feel fairly comfortable financially, both in terms of my stipend and what my parents can provide me. I feel lucky to not have to worry about being hungry. Also, I really value my being able to pursue higher education with support from my family, my friends, and my institution. Now there’s a satisfactory definition of all that was encompassed in “bracket” :)

wheeeeeee

It’s a good week :) The downside of a good week is that I find it hard motivating myself to do work. I keep wanting to reward myself with breaks for every itty bitty piece of work I get done. It doesn’t help that the World Series is going on. Go Boston! It’s quick and easy to find one’s baseball loyalties in this city.

So birthday tomorrow … the 2-2. hopefully I’ll remember to bring my camera along and take pictures of everything. I’m sad that i can’t remember my friends’ birthdays, though. I have a couple of good friends from high school whom I haven’t talked to for a while, AND I didn’t call them for their birthdays. I had good intentions … like sending cookies or care packages or what not … and in the end, I didn’t do any of that, and I didn’t even call. I am a bad friend.

Oh yeah, and just what kind of a mascot are sox? Why isn’t there a team called the Red Pants or something? It’s kind of cute; kinda like … awww, the red sockies! But I doubt they’d appreciate that. Oh yeah, speaking of socks, apparently Apple’s coming out with socks for their iPods in November … little sockies to put on your iPods so that the screens won’t scratch, and the little things can stay warm! how cute!! not that I have an iPod or anything … but at $29 a sock, it’s probably better i don’t have an iPod. It’s just a money sink.
