Mantra Bday

There were rumors of Ben Affleck; there were smoked salmon rolls dropped on the floor; there was Jack completely wasted; there were event managers whom I’d rather not deal with anymore. But in the end, I had a great time throwing what I hoped was a fabulous party, and I hope everyone there enjoyed themselves as well. Some wonderful friends came out to help celebrate, and it was great to have three of us West Side girls reunited in Boston (Xijia, get out of Hong Kong!!).

Here are some beautiful pictures from the night: bday24. Oh yeah, notice from the pictures that I got my hair permed while I was in China. My thoughts on it are ambivalent.  I guess I don’t really regret having done it, but it is something that I would probably never do again.

I haven’t been posting because YinYin’s still in town, and we went to NYC this past weekend (those pictures forthcoming). Soon though, soon, you’ll be hearing more from me.

harbor cruise

Grad orientation had a harbor cruise last Sunday night that some of us upper year posers went on as well. I actually uploaded some pictures from it. It was the usual crew, plus Cathal, who’s now back from Ireland!!

Following up on my last post about wearing glasses for the past week. It really is giving me a splitting headache when I wear them, so I try not to wear them unless necessary. So I guess I’ll be a bit blind until next Tuesday.

*EDIT* the headache wasn’t from the glasses. I was actually running a 101F fever yesterday.  Regular readers should all know about my below-normal body temperature, which makes 101 seem even more grave :(

not feeling up to it

I didn’t have time to make an album, so here are the low-res pictures from my camera from this past weekend. Maybe I’ll make an album when I get everybody else’s pictures, too.

I don’t feel particularly motivated to write anything right now, though I am brewing about lots of stuff in my mind … recent headlines in the news, various people&places&love&lovelost, bragging rights from something a couple of months ago, and how the summer’s more than halfway over. Maybe I’ll get around to updating in a couple of days.

a movie-script life

Before I go on, and before I forget, here are some pictures from the fateful HST formal, which in retrospect may not have been all that fateful. I posted these a while ago, but I don’t think I ever made a mention here.

Okay, and now for the movie-script life.

You know the feeling you get when things around you seem so surreal that you stop and ask yourself “wait, am I sure I’m not living in a movie?” That’s how I have felt this whole past week (and maybe longer than that even), and it’s not even a good movie. It is a sad movie with sad (sad-melancholy, not sad-pathetic) characters with tragic lives.

I was recounting to a dear dear friend today about the conversations that I have had recently, the events that have unfolded, the people around me, the drama … and unprompted, she said, “wow, I feel like I’m reading a movie script.” Which was exactly how I felt, and her saying that just made me even more aware of how ridiculously unbelievable everything has been. But what do you do? Life is life is life is life.

Remember those Carrie-Bradshaw voiceovers that always summed up SATC episodes? That’s how my thoughts run these days (case-in-point: “do we ever truly find that person? And how often do we simply stop at ‘good enough’?” … add some Carrie wit, and it’ll fit right in).

Anyways, in other news (and not much happier), I sprained my ankle playing ultimate today. Worst part was, I didn’t even end up saving the disc I jumped for. At least an injury incurred while making a save is a glorified injury. Now I’m just a sucker who didn’t know any better. The happy news is that I love my summer ultimate team. I’m so glad I joined and stuck with it, despite feeling so incredibly nervous when I showed up to my first game because I knew that I wouldn’t know a single person in the league.

playing pictures catch-up

Long time no post. Making it up by catching up on all the pictures that I haven’t posted in ages, in chronological order from most recent.

  • Walden Pond - Marcio and I wanted to drive a mini cooper (and a convertible at that!), and Walden Pond seemed like a good place to go since it is only about 30 minutes away from Boston. It is where Henry David Thoreau lived for 2 years in a cabin, and where he wrote Walden.
  • Paul & Joyce in Boston - One of my best friends from college, Paul, visited Boston with his fiance Joyce. Even though Joyce has given up her Wahoo loyalties to cheer for the UNC basketball team, we still love her.
  • Les Miserable - I have sung tunes from this musical longer than I have lived (yup, even before I was conceived). When I found out the Broadway was coming to Boston, there was no way I would not go. The pictures were sneakily taken because i don’t think camera were allowed in the opera house.
  • Valentine’s Day flowers - The flower bouquet and roses were gorgeous, so I tried out the micro function on my digital camera. Not too shabby micro-lens!
  • Thanksgiving in Charleston - As usual, Charleston is absolutely beautiful. I miss going home.

picture time

a couple of recent albums (and i really should go spend my time doing something else besides writing in here everyday):

Hector found really some really great values on airfare to Ireland back this summer, so on a whim, we got tickets for Veteran’s Day weekend, along with Phil. Hector’s brother joined us in Ireland. Since we only had three days, we didn’t get to do a whole lot, but did manage to see lots of beautiful countryside and of course drink lots of guinness and whiskey.

I realized that I’ve been so caught up with work and life woes over the past two years that it’s been a long long time since I’ve done something for myself. One thing that I really miss is taking pictures. So taking advantage of the beautiful weather, I went out with a camera.

some (bittersweet) pictures from the past few months

Once again, I have neglected to post pictures until much later after they were taken. Here are three sets of pictures from the past few months. They are also accessible through my gallery page.

Acadia National Park - This trip took place at the end of June. Originally, I was just going camping with some friends. Then, as circumstances had it, I joined an adventure race team that was missing a female teammate at the last minute. The trip was tons of fun, with the first day full (12 hours) of biking, hiking, canoeing. We biked a total of 40 miles, including a 45 min, 5-mile uphill climb of 2000 ft. We hiked to the top of 5 or 6 summits, and we canoed across and back the length of a lake. Exhausted, my second day at Acadia was spent eating and swimming in a warm warm Lake Wood.

Chicago, IL - At the end of July, Ryan had to go to Chicago for a large patent law job fair/interview conference thing. Because he was to be there for interviews on Thursday and Friday, I decided to join him in Chicago and see the city together. I also got a chance to see an old friend from junior high school in West Lafayette, IN, who drove up to Chicago to meet us. We also met a couple of friends of hers in Chicago. All in all, it was a lot of fun: we took a skyscrapers tour, went to the top of one of the tallest buildings in the world, and ate dim sum at Chinatown :)

Charlottesville, VA - I had an alumni event back in Charlottesville during the last weekend of September. So, Ryan decided to join me in going back to UVA, and we visited with some old friends, went to our usual eateries, hung out on the lawn on a beautiful day, and reminesced about our times at Ole Virginia.

summer pictures!

I finally stopped being lazy and updated my photo album page. Here’s a sampling of some pictures this summer; there are more in the albums on the page :)

random musings

If you don’t yet use Picasa, I highly recommend it. It’s a one-click Photoshop. I still like my Photoshop, but now I don’t have to tweak 4 different settings to get a picture to look nice. All I gotta do is feel luck with Picasa.

Katie Folz got married in Pittsburgh this past weekend. Pictures are uploaded. I didn’t forget my camera this time, but I think I also was a little photo hog. Sometimes I just lose perception of things around me, and all I focus on is getting a good shot. I was in the way of the real wedding photographer a couple of times, and it made me feel really bad.

Cathering Borovicka’s getting married at the end of May in Maine. Randi is getting married in October in Charleston. AJ’s getting married next summer. Lewis has a baby on the way. It’s only the Governor’s School people who are getting married. The only other friend of mine who got married was Jenn, and she and Robby had been dating since 11th grade. So why do govies have such a high propensity for getting married? Or is it just my class?

A couple of people are coming up here to MIT/Boston next year. Phil Lane is going for his Dr. Phil title here, and a family friend who goes way back to West Lafayette, Indiana is coming here for college (though she likely will go to the dark side and go to Harvard).

GRT decisions come out next week. I’m in the running for Simmons, Next House, New House 3, New House 4. I listed all 4 on my preferences sheet, which may or may not have been a mistake … I definitely have favorites among those 4, but I guess I’d still take the position if I didn’t get my favorite. I’m just being my usual pessimistic self thinking that I’ll get screwed over and not get anything because I’m not in any of those places’ top tier.

Hodge Podge

A fellow UVA wahoo is in the top 24 of American Idol!!! You can check out his Idol profile, and you can watch Monday nights 8-9pm on Fox and vote for him :) He didn’t sing that well tonight, but I voted for him anyways. And FYI: I haven’t missed a single American Idol episode yet this season. I’m such a sucker for TV.

This past weekend was a bit crazy: lots of work, but lots of fun. Ryan and I went skiing at Mt. Sunapee with the S&P sponsored trip, came back Saturday night and immediately got ready for the Law Prom, the law school’s annual semiformal.

I think I sprained my neck skiing.

Because I have so much work, I procrastinate more than ever.
