Remember 1995? I do. The song of the year (for me) was Alanis Morissette’s Ironic. I memorized her songs, bought her CD (my first!), and all in all worshipped her. Because of this, Alanis has always had a special place in my heart. Who can forget one’s first CD, right?
So there have been a couple of flashbacks to 1995 these past two weeks. While in Chicago the weekend before last, I saw one member of my middle school posse (I’m lazy, so I haven’t posted pictures yet … but they’re coming). Not having seen each other since the end of 8th grade wasn’t even an issue. We filled in the gaps and went on yapping like any good friends would. It truly amazes me how some friendships last forever seemingly naturally, while others wither regardless of how much I work to maintain them.
Flashback #2 is more how my recent life deserves a song from the past to describe it, and none other than Ironic. Those closest to me know that I have been struggling for some time now with this idea of grad school, and my lack of excitement for my current project does not help my struggles. I left computer engineering because I disliked programming day in, day out. I switched fields to pursue bioengineering because I thought that I would be more interested in it. However, what ended up happening was that my computer engineering background made me a shoe-in for projects that involve computational modeling. So the irony comes from the fact that I left computer engineering because I didn’t enjoy it, but in the end, in bioengineering, I still got pidgeon-holed into programming doing exactly what I tried to avoid by leaving computer engineering.
Isn’t it ironic? Don’t you think?
A little too ironic, and yeah, I really do think
It’s like rain on your wedding day
It’s a free ride when you’ve already paid
It’s good advice, that you just didn’t take
And who would have thought it figures?

I’m surprised I didn’t discover this song until a couple of days ago … so good, so catchy:
“Deliah plays that ol’ church pian’a
Sitting out on her daddy’s farm
She always thought that we’d be together
Lord I never meant to do her harm
Said she could hear me singin’ in the choir
Me, I heard another song
I caught wind and hit the road runnin’
And lord, I’ve been a long time gone
Been a long time gone
Lord, I ain’t had a prayer since I don’t know when
Long time gone
And it ain’t comin’ back again”

You know what really bothers me? Formals/semiformals that play hip hop music. It’s just not right. What happened to go ol’ jazz? Or how about some Bon Jovi Livin’ on a Prayer? I feel so dirty shakin’ my thang and grinding to hip hop in my beautiful dress and nice makeup. I can tell that this ain’t Kansas anymore.

About a week ago, I had this song stuck in my head. All I knew was that the first two words of the song are “Hey hey,” and I had a general idea of the tune. I hummed it for Ryan, but given the fact that both of us are rather tone deaf, that idea didn’t work so well. I thought maybe the song was Dispatch, but not really because we couldn’t find anything. The most annoying part was that not only did I not know what the song’s name was, I didn’t know any lyrics beyond “hey hey” and some segment of a barely recognizable tune.
Well, I came up with another couple of words that I thought were part of the lyrics of the song, and somehow those extra couple of words jogged something in Ryan’s mind, and together we searched Dispatch (again), Barenaked Ladies, and finally found out the identity of the song!!! Sister Hazel: Change Your Mind, a piece of information that now allows me to sleep well at night.
Hey, hey
Did you ever think
There might be another way
To just feel better,
Just feel better about today …
. . .
If you want to be somebody else,
If you’re tired of fighting battles with yourself
If you want to be somebody else
Change you mind …

Last day of 2004, next to last day at home relaxing. My dad said something about “you didn’t seem to have done much studying over this break.” I lied and said, “sure I did, but only a little bit.” and he said “but it’s not a big deal; breaks are times for relaxing, so you should be relaxing. just work hard when you get back to school.” When has he ever said that before?? It’s always, work hard work hard, do what you’re supposed to do. Wow, it was different hearing my dad tell me to relax, have fun, enjoy the break.
Ali drove through town yesterday with her brother en route to his place in Beaufort, so we met up, got some soup, and went to Old Navy’s. Ali tried on black garbs as her brother and I complained about how expensive nice clothes are. She stayed through dinner downtown with some c/o2k1ers with whom I was meeting for dinner and Jump concert. It felt good seeing govies again, despite my overkill in dressing because Jason told me people were dressing up … thanks a lot Jason.
There are no words to describe the concert, absolutely spectacular. It helped too that Corey and I very luckily got reseated to the front row, center section, just a few feet away from Ward Williams. Altogether, counting this concert, I’ve been to 5 Jump concerts, which becomes even more ridiculous in light of the fact that I’ve only been to 6 concerts ever (a Wallflowers concert back in 1997 completes the 6). But geez, I just never get tired of JLC music.

My UVA email account still works. If you search for me in the UVA directory, I’m still there, along with my status as an “undergraduate student,” my email alias, and my webpage address (on the UVA server of course). If you search MIT, I’m there too, with a little “G” designating my uncertain graduate status. Maybe UVA’s just really late in the game of deleting folks out of their database. Ryan just said to me yesterday that he wished UVA would just get done with it and delete us out of the system. Part of me wishes that, but a greater part of me am really glad it’s not yet gone. I can’t imagine how it would feel to finally realize that they’ve flushed me out of their system entirely.
On the other hand, MIT’s not that bad of a place. I’m having a good time meeting new people, but I also think that these first few days, people aren’t really themselves. It’s like the first few days of college; everyone goes into friend-meeting mode. Nevertheless, I’m glad to have made a few friends, and I feel so free these days walking around with no responsibilities. Too bad classes start tomorrow. It’s as Jump, Little Children says: “But tonight, not so far above me / Tonight, I’m sleeping under this utopian sky / And I don’t ever want to wake up / Please don’t wake me up”
Yeah, just let me sleep tonight and never have to wake up to tomorrow’s 8:30 biochem class.
