Conjured Activism

conquering the world one oxymoron at a time

January 2, 2004

It’s a new year, but I’m back in Charlottesville the day after. Break at home was great; I wish I could have stayed longer, or at least had more time at home when I could have just lounged around. I memorized about 600 words the first week and a half I was at home, in preparation for taking the GREs. *sigh* It’s my own fault for not having done it this summer and doing badly on the verbal part (according to my parents) back when I took it in September. Now they’re happy (though not too happy; an 800 would make them happiest). But the test was Wednesday, leaving me with really only yesterday to lounge around since I had to fly back to school today.

Talked to Ryan tonight. I’m going up to northern Virginia tomorrow to see him. I hope that he won’t have to work (he’s on call) so that I can get there early afternoon. If he does work, I won’t be able to see him until 7ish. I’m staying with his family tomorrow night; very generous of them! :) But I’m nervous about meeting his parents. Yeah, making good first impressions was never one of my strengths. He recommended that I bring them something, so I’m going to go shopping for a plant tomorrow. Hehe.

Tubla’s having a party at his house Sunday for resstaff exec. I’m really looking forward to that. I miss the staff bonding I experienced in First Year Area last year, and I feel like those SRs get love from their staff and from each other. I don’t have a staff, and I only have 4 other HRs and Laura for love. And I don’t even see them because none of us live close together, unlike those First Year folks. *sigh* I guess that’s one of the prices that I paid.

One of my scholarship benefactors wrote me back! I got their card when I walked into my room today. They want to me call them when I have a free hour for lunch or dinner. That’s so nice of them :) There are 6 families that contributed to my scholarship. I met one First Year at a dinner event at Alumni Hall, but not any of the other 5. I think it would be a really neat experience! I’ll call them next week perhaps. I wonder what they do around town. They are the only family (of the 6) who live in Charlottesville.
