While traveling this Thanksgiving weekend, in typical wahoo fashion, I randomly ran into a fellow Virginia alum. She was even a fellow Jeffie. I really do wonder how it is that all us wahoos keep running into each other. Other instances of run-ins this year documented here and here.
I also caught a bug while traveling to/from home. The minor sore throat yesterday really developed into a full-blown cold today. I am feeling pretty miserable right now. All I want to do is curl up and sleep for days, but there’s so much to be done this coming week …

I think it’s cute that your dad sat you down to talk about dating. It might have seemed awkward, but believe me - it was with best intentions. As a guy, there are a lot of things I know about guys (obviously) that women don’t, so if I had a daughter I’d want to give her the other perspective. I’m lucky to have as many female friends as I do, since they help *me* get the other side as far as women are concerned. Your parents presumably just want you to find someone you can be happy with.
As for your dad’s specific advice, well, I think a lot of people need to hear it! I remember talking to a female friend of mine a long time ago, and I was shocked when she said it’s totally up to the guy to initiate a relationship - talk about living in the ’50s! I was even more appalled by her reasoning: she said if guys get rejected they just laugh it off with their buddies. I was amazed that people could think like that! Sure, some guys may be like that. But a lot of guys are hurt at least as much as girls when someone says, “No.” And plenty of guys would be flattered to have an attractive intelligent girl show an interest in them.
All that said, no one should really be hurt by rejection - birds and bees like different kinds of flowers, but that doesn’t mean some flowers are prettier than others. Personal preferences are funny things.
Hope you get well soon Shan - eat lots of chicken, vegetables, and orange juice!
