Conjured Activism

conquering the world one oxymoron at a time

first day on the job, and i already screwed up

I started my Kaplan job today, teaching a GMAT test prep class that meets twice a week for 4.5 weeks. I was supposed to administer a diagnostic exam tonight to my students, except I started 40 minutes late. Why? Because I was an idiot and thought that 75 minutes + 75 minutes was 1.5 hours, so of course I would have time to finish this diagnostic exam by 9pm, so let me just keep rambling on about nothing. All I need to do is to make sure I start the test by 7:30pm, and it’s okay if i start at 7:40 because what’s 10 minutes anyway? Oh, except 75 minutes from 7:40 is 8:55pm … ohhh wait … I’m supposed to finish administering this test by 9pm … oh crap … 75+75 is 2.5 hours not 1.5hr. Umm … what do I do now?

Ye-ah. First day on the job. I am a complete idiot. Reminds me of when I wore white shorts to school the first day I started at Burtsfield and managed to sit in a puddle of black paint before it was even lunchtime. True story.

After reading the story problem above, Shan’s course began at ________ and her diagnostic test should have run for_______ minutes.

a. 7:30, 75
b. 8:55, 75
c. 7:30, 150
d. 7:30, 90
e. not enough information.

I choose “e.” Shan. Now - What?

hahaha, paula you’re so funny. so my class started at 6:30pm. i was supposed to do a short/quick intro and then administer the diagnostic exam. the exam has two 75-minute sections, so it should have taken 2.5 hours total … meaning students could leave by 9. i, however, did not start the exam until 7:40, which actually made me 80 minutes late … hmm …

Don’t be too hard on yourself. Without accidents and mistakes, we wouldn’t have (all discovered by accident) velcro, penicillin, x-rays, dynamite, vulcanized rubber, synthetic dyes, rayon, iodine, or helium. :-)

it’s actually even more complicated than that b/c it turns out that i wasn’t even supposed to proctor the diagnostic exam; i was supposed to turn it over to someone else … so i basically left right after i started the test at 7:40 b/c i was told to leave b/c i wasn’t supposed to be there … and the person who was actually supposed to proctor the test stayed until the end, around 10:25, when everybody finished (55 minutes behind schedule). i was told that some of the students were a bit “peeved” … UGH

okay, sure, i screwed up the timing, but if i wasn’t even supposed to proctor the test, why the heck didn’t the proctor come into the class at the beginning if the diagnostic was really supposed to start at 6:30? shouldn’t he have started to wonder when 7 rolled around and he’s not proctoring the test that he’s supposed to yet? ugh, it was so confusing …
